Step back in time and stay in a beautifully preserved Grade II listed Purbeck stone cottage, built in 1792 and tucked away in one of Swanage’s most historic corners. With Jurassic Coast walks, classic sandy beaches, and cosy pubs and restaurants just moments from the front door, this characterful home offers an unforgettable base for exploring the very best of Swanage. You may even hear the steam train chugging out of the station on its way to Corfe Castle.

Inside, the cottage is full of charm, with solid stone walls, stone roof tiles, and the gentle, church‑like aroma that comes with centuries of history. It sleeps up to four guests across two bedrooms: a twin room on the lower ground floor and a double room on the first floor. The main bathroom sits on the top floor and even offers a glimpse of the sea—though please note it is accessed through the master bedroom. There is also a handy ground‑floor cloakroom.

The galley kitchen is equipped for simple self‑catering, with an electric hob, oven, microwave, toaster, kettle and dishwasher. A small outdoor area beside the cottage provides space for securing bicycles and drying clothing, ideal after a day on the coast.

The cosy living space includes a fold‑out dining table and stacking stools for flexible seating. Free parking is available a short stroll down Church Hill near the Mill Pond, on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Because of the cottage’s age, steep staircases and open fires, it is not suitable for very young children, and stays with little ones are at guests’ own risk. The lower ground‑floor bedroom can feel a little damp after heavy rain, so in winter the cottage is best enjoyed as a romantic retreat for two using the master bedroom.

We welcome one well‑behaved dog for a small additional charge of £30 per stay. We simply ask that pets are not left alone, stay off the furniture, and keep to their baskets when wet.

Guests have full access to the cottage apart from a few locked cupboards.

This is a truly unique Swanage stay—full of history, character and coastal charm, perfect for guests who love something a little different.

Location

6 Church Hill, Swanage, United Kingdom

This charming cottage sits on Church Hill, one of Swanage’s most historic little lanes, perfectly placed for guests who want to soak up everything our seaside town has to offer. Step outside and you’re moments from Swanage’s sandy beach, the Mill Pond, independent shops, cafés, and some of the town’s favourite pubs and restaurants.

The cottage is tucked within the old stone quarter of Swanage, where winding streets, Purbeck stone cottages and glimpses of the sea create a truly timeless atmosphere. From here, you can wander straight onto Jurassic Coast walking trails, stroll down to the pier, or simply enjoy the gentle bustle of the town centre.

The heritage steam railway is close enough that you may hear it jugging out of the station on its way to Corfe Castle—a nostalgic soundtrack to your stay. Free parking is available a short walk down Church Hill near the Mill Pond (first come, first served).

If you’re looking for a stay that feels authentically Swanage—historic, coastal, and wonderfully walkable—this is it.
